Beginners Guide

Software Requirements:
Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Web page editing software
WS_FTP Pro FTP file transfer program     www.ipswitch.com

Purchase copies of the software listed above and install per instructions.  We use FrontPage to edit and maintain the web pages and WS_FT Pro to transfer files to and from the web server.  Pages are edited on your PC and published (uploaded) to the website after editing.

Using Front Page to edit and create WEB pages:

In order to use the standard formats for the Troop WEB you should download a copy of the WEB for editing purposes.  Starting new pages within this web will maintain the page layout we use.  We are currently using 10 pt Arial Bold in grey color for text content.  In order to proof your changes you may want to view your changes through your browser.  Note that things viewable from the browser may not print as seen in the browser.  You may want to print preview the pages as well.

You can review the web structure or page links from the Navigation Pane or the Navigation View.  Pages are edited in the page view.

Changes of interest to the greater troop should be recorded on BSA TROOP 474 home page (index.htm).  Changes of interest to editors should be logged to the What's New Page (ourflag.htm).  You must upload changes to these pages as well as any other pages you edit.

To find the files you have changed run a FIND on your web directory (probably My Webs) and sub directories.  Set the dates tab for the number of days you have been editing since your last upload.  Create a screen print of the file names and directories you will be uploading.  Please post the screen print image with the What's New page.  This will keep the list of uploaded changes.  Web editors can review the page for changes and download new pages before they begin editing.

After editing the WEB all pages that have been changed and files that have been attached to pages will be uploaded via WS_FTP Pro (as described below).

Once the pages have been uploaded compose an Email describing the changes and mail it to the Webmaster and other contributors to the web site.  This will help insure that contributors are working on the current version of the site.  Loading edited versions of old web pages will overwrite the efforts of other contributors.
