Boy Scout Troop 474

Guilford, Connecticut 06437

LOOK AT THE SCOUT IN THE MIRROR; Are you a leader?

Rank Advancement means Leadership Development which requires the Trust and Respect of those who depend on you as a leader. Leaders have a Responsibility to those who Depend on you.  Those that depend on leaders include, those that follow (i.e. junior scouts), those that delegate (i.e. superiors), and last but not least, the leader himself (self reliance).

Leadership is a demonstrated step up from mediocre behavior. Leaders have demonstrated possession of skills and personal values.  Leadership requires living the Scout Oath and Scout Law through achievement in scouting activities, athletics, academics, community service, music and the like.

Attaining Eagle is not the absence of bad, but rather is the achievement of good through positive actions

ASK YOURSELF THE FOLLOWING:

1. Have you been a leader or a liability?

2. Have you been a self starter or driven by what someone else wants for you?

3. Have you rank advanced smoothly over time or crammed in order to claim the title?

4. Specifically what are your achievements in life?

5. Specifically what leadership skills have you demonstrated, what is your leadership style?

6. Do peers respect you, are subordinates eager to follow you, and can superiors rely on you?

7. Do you blame others or do you take responsibility for your own life choices and behavior?

8. Do you tend to cheat or tend to see things done correctly regardless of the risk of failure?

9. Which is more important to you, personal character or title?

10. Are you trustworthy and brave?

RECITE THE SCOUT OATH AND THEN STOP WHEN YOU SAY “OBEY THE SCOUT LAW”. Then ask yourself; Do I really live by the Oath and LAW?

Celebrate who you are. Be brave, Make the right choices. Be trustworthy. Gain the respect of others. You have to give respect to get respect. Go for Eagle
