11/23/05 Update for December Camping Trip

Saturday, December 3 – Sunday, December 4

                                                Lake Quonnipaug, Guilford

Cold weather camping and hiking trip. General scouting activities on Saturday, Agenda to be put together by patrol leaders. Extensive hike on Sunday of approximately 13 miles. This will be a qualifying hike for hiking merit badge. For scouts not adequately conditioned for full hike, the mid point will be at the Route 77/Bluff Head trail head; they will be able to end the hike at that point. For Scouts planning on participating on the extreme winter camping trips in January and February, this is a necessary shake down trip, an opportunity to test gear and clothing, along with coping with prolonged time in the cold.

Departure: Saturday at 10 a.m. meet at Lake Quonnipaug campsite.

Return: Sunday around 4:30 p.m to the Church Parking lot.

Specialized gear needed: Full Rain Suit (NOT a poncho), Hiking Boots, Day pack, Two Liters of Water

Crew Leaders: Mr. Lou Federici, Mr. Art Aery

SIGN UP:

Please e-mail Mr. Aery or Mr. Federici by Sunday if you are planning on attending, preferably sooner. Your patrol leader will then get in touch with you to organize food, tenting, and activities.

FOOD:

Food will be organized and purchased by patrol. This is a great opportunity to showcase your cooking skills. We will have plenty of time, and with car camping there is no limitation on food or cooking equipment. Sunday will be a trail lunch.

GEAR AND CLOTHING:

Scouts should be using the “Winter Clothing List”. FULL RAIN SUIT IS REQUIRED. Consider bringing hatchet or pack saw.  Be sure to bring “10 ESSENTIALS”.  Layering is critical – see “Layering 101” on the troop website.

TENTING:

Prior to Thursday, scouts should decide who they will be tenting with. Let Mr. Aery know ASAP if you will need a troop tent.
